YOUTH REC - FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is Rec (Recreational) soccer?
Rec or Recreational soccer is for youth players from Kindergarten (5 years old) to 12th grade (18 years old) who want to play soccer without a significant time commitment.
The rec program is our largest in terms of the number of players. Players sign up by school grade. Kindergarten and older players are assigned teams coached by volunteer parents. Teams play each other on Saturdays in the Fall (Sep - Nov) and Spring (Apr - June); some Inter-town league and 3M games will be on Sundays or weeknights.

When does Rec (Recreational) soccer take place?
The Fall (Sep - Nov) and Spring (Apr - Jun) Rec programs play most games on Saturdays; with some Inter-town league and 3M games on Sundays or weeknights. Teams in 3rd grade and higher will also have a weekday evening team practice organized and scheduled by the team's coach.  Schedules will be set and sent out 1 week prior to the start of the season. Unlike a class, there are not set times for K-12th grade players.  The times may vary week to week and are unknown until the schedule is set just prior to the season.  Inter-Town and 3M league schedules are set by other towns and the full season schedule will not be known until a few weeks into the season.

How are the Rec (Recreational) teams formed?
Each league is managed by a League Manager who identifies coaching volunteers and organizes players onto teams.  Teams may be co-ed based on the number of players that season.  Once teams are formed, team assignments and rosters are distributed to players, typically 1 week prior to the start of the season. Practice schedules (Grades 3-8) are communicated by parent coach or by email from WWPSA.  Game schedules are posted on the WWPSA website (Grades K-2), the Inter-town website (Grades 3-9), and the 3M website (Grades 9-12).

What age divisions are available?
Each Rec league represents a school grade or group of grades, depending on the number of projected registrants. Typically, players are divided into a Co-ed K program and separate Boy and Girl leagues for 1st through 12th grade. The 1st through 12th grade players might be grouped together based on the number of players registered - for example, Boys 1st and 2nd grade might be combined into one league or Boys and Girls 7th-9th grade might be combined into one league. Players may play in an older division than their school grade but may never play in a younger division.

Why do players get two (a green and a white) team jerseys?
Players have both a green and white jersey so that teams can wear different colors when playing each other.  One team is designated the home team (white) and the other, the away team (green). You are the home team if you are the first team listed on the schedule or if the schedule states "vs" [another team's name]. You are the away team if you are the second team listed on the schedule or if the schedule states "at" [another team's name]. It is always a good idea to bring both each week just incase! Uniforms may be reused from season to season.

Bad weather and dangerous field conditions may cancel games and practices.
For Saturday or Sunday games, cancellations will be posted on the website and/or emailed as soon as WWPSA confirms the situation.
For Weeknight practices, cancellations will be posted on the website and/or emailed by 3:00 pm if possible.
For Individual Team practices, cancellations by the team coach will be communicated directly by the coach to the players on the team.
Cancelled practices and games are not guaranteed to be rescheduled.

Where are the fields located in Zaitz Park?
The field maps of all WWPSA fields are posted on the website here.  Signs will be placed next to each field or on the goals of the field.

What is the volunteer bond?
WWPSA is a volunteer run organization that relies on volunteers to run the programs and maintain fields. To encourage volunteering, WWPSA charges a volunteer bond per family per seasonal year (July through June).
The bond is automatically added to the cost of registration for the first youth player registered by a family. The bond will be credited/refunded once a family member fulfills a volunteer shift of at least 3 hours.
Volunteer opportunities are announced throughout the year and filled on a first-come, first-serve basis. All you need to do is sign-up for an opportunity, show up, sign-in (as proof of volunteering), and do your part. Thank you for helping! Please allow 1 month for the board to process your refund. You will either be refunded via the credit card that paid the volunteer bond or mailed a check if the payment was made longer than 6 months ago.
You will forfeit your Volunteer Bond and those funds will be returned to the WWPSA General Fund, if you do not complete your obligation by the end of June or you sign up but do not show so please make sure you can commit to the volunteer session.
Instructions or changes to the event may be emailed through the website so again make sure the DO NOT EMAIL is not checked on the profile (where your name and address are) of the volunteer.  
If the event is cancelled due to weather or other issues, you need to sign up for a different volunteer opportunity.
If the page is blank there are currently no open volunteer opportunities.
K-2 practices are at the time noted on the Schedule page of the website a week prior to the start of the season. (On the full website, go to Teams across the top.  After selecting the year, division, and team in the dropdowns, click Schedule on the left hand side (above Roster).  The practice start time is there and the game will be played directly after the practice at the same location.
Grades 3-9 practices are noted on the Schedule page of the website (On the full website, go to Teams across the top.  After selecting the year, division, and team in the dropdowns, click Schedule on the left hand side (above Roster)). The coaches will select the day and time of the practices a week prior to the start of the season. The games are on the Inter-town website.  Select the Match Groups for the division you would like to view the schedule. This is updated a week prior to the start of the season with the first 2 weeks only.  The rest of the season is set week 2.
Grades 10-12 practices are noted on the Schedule page of the website (On the full website, go to Teams across the top.  After selecting the year, division, and team in the dropdowns, click Schedule on the left hand side (above Roster). The coaches will select the day and time of the practices a week prior to the start of the season. The games are on the 3M website. This is updated a week prior to the start of the season.

How do I check my registration / find out my team?
Team coaches will also reach out once teams are formed. Some teams may have team Whatsup groups to communicate practices and games.

Can I receive a refund?
No refunds will be issued after the first session of the program.

How can I get a uniform?
A WWPSA Uniform Kit (1 green shirt, 1 white shirt, 1 shorts (pants), and 1 set of socks) can be purchased during registration. 
Uniform distribution days will be held prior to the start of the season and during the first week of the season.  They will be announced via email. If you register for a uniform after the season begins or you missed the pickup, submit question/request for uniform pickup here.
Players MUST wear: soccer cleats and shin guards (INSIDE socks)
Players CANNOT wear: jewelry or casts.
Players should bring water/drinks and a soccer ball (PreK-2 uses size 3, 3-6 uses size 4, 7-12 uses size 5)

There will be a weekend prior to the start of the season for which families will recieve a coupon to Dick's Sporting Goods (530 Nassau Park Blvd, Princeton, NJ 08540).  This 20% off coupon can be used to get any necessary soccer items and anything else you would like! (some exclusions apply).  This will be announced via email.
