The WWPSA Spring Recreational Soccer is different to the Fall Program. There are no pre-assigned teams with parent coaches, no set game schedule and no referees. This is very deliberate.
Let Them Play !
The Spring Rec program began a few years ago with the desire to recreate, with as few limitations as possible, the unstructured style of "street soccer" enjoyed by kids throughout the world. Children of all ages, boys and girls, play "pick-up" games on streets, parking lots, school playgrounds, and local parks. They organize their own games, decide the playing area, choose teams, set up goals, develop their own rules, and just play. Often, there are no adults present and there is never any coaching. Many of the world’s greatest players in the past and present learned the game in this environment.
While it is not practical or realistic to recreate entirely this environment, WWPSA set out to create a program which would allow our players to enjoy unstructured pick-up soccer games without adult direction but ensuring a fun and safe environment. From this concept, the Spring Rec Program was born.
For K-8th players, a 90-minute Saturday session begins with fun soccer activities delivered by professional trainers and, starting in 2009, by big brothers and big sisters. The big brothers and big sisters are paid volunteers, similar to the referees in the fall, who take direction from the professional instructors and who ensure a safe environment and involve the professional trainers when needed. After about 30 minutes, players are divided into small groups and play pick-up games. The primary goal is to let the players enjoy the game with a minimum of direction and coaching, to let them make their own decisions, determine their own rules and simply play the game.
Our Spring Pre-K Program is run entirely by professional trainers who specialize in teaching our youngest players to love the game of soccer in a fun and encouraging environment. All players begin each weekly session with a practice consisting of various games and activities to encourage individual skills development, followed by a scrimmage where teams are selected with competitive balance in mind to give all players the opportunity to play and continue to learn to love the game of soccer.
We’re very proud of our Spring Rec Program and have watched it grow in attendance each year since its inception in 2004. The use of big brothers and big sisters has resulted in a very stable program that can continue to grow with the number of players interested.
