Under the leadership of Jeffrey Vanderbeek and Michael Gilfillan of the NHL New Jersey Devils ownership group, the New Jersey Ironmen joined the Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) as an expansion franchise for the 2007-08 season.
The Ironmen were formally introduced to the city of Newark on Thursday, June 21, 2007. Along with Mr. Vanderbeek and Mr. Gilfillan, Newark Mayor Cory A. Booker and MISL Commissioner Steve Ryan were on hand for the unveiling of the team name and logo. It was also announced that 20-year banking and business executive, Tony Novo, would serve as the General Manager and Vice President of Business Operations. Additionally, Omid Namazi, two-time MISL Coach of the Year, was introduced as the first-ever Head Coach and Vice President of Soccer Operations of the Ironmen.
The Ironmen play their home schedule at Prudential Center as in the Downtown Core Redevelopment District of Newark. Prudential Center, which is managed by AEG, is the first major sports and entertainment venue to open its doors in the largest media market in the nation in over 25 years.
