Wasps v. Cosmos Fall 2009 Derby: A Good Match
Competitive Adult Team News

The WWPSA Men’s Adult Competitive teams, Wasps and Cosmos, met for the first time in the MCAMSL Fall 2009 season.  Both teams had been playing well in the league, the Cosmos were 2-1-1 while the Wasps were 3-0-1.  Having played numerous friendly matches this year and practicing together weekly meant both teams wanted a win very badly.

The match was well played and both teams had chances in the first half but the game was scoreless at the half.  The Wasps pressed the Cosmo defense in the second half forcing a corner kick.  Wasp captain, Paul Moorcroft, easily placed a ball past the Cosmo keeper from a ball chipped over the defense by fullback Mike Donnelly who retrieved the delected corner kick.  A few minutes later, center midfielder Brian Cenker rocketed a no-angle goal from the left corner past the Cosmo keeper giving the Wasps a 2-0 lead.

The Cosmo side was undaunted and continued to press their attacks and were eventually awarded a penalty kick late in the second half.  Cosmo captain, Pedro Portilla, paused strategically and then placed a good clean shot headed just inside the right post.  However, Wasp keeper, Marian Thomas anticipated the shot with a full extension power dive to the right post just deflecting the shot to safety.  The Cosmos pressed many dangerous attacks but Thomas came up big with save after save.

It was a well fought match ending Wasps 2, Cosmos 0.  The Wasps are second in the table but with one more game to play than the leader, have a chance to take the number one spot.
